Commentary:Desperation Morale has physically examined the first product in this series, Ultimate Desert Fox Core 1, but has not examined the other three series products.
The Ultimate Desert Fox series is a no-frills partial recycling of some of the scenarios from the larger Afrika Korps/Fox Strikes Back/Überfox series, with the twist that the scenarios now take place on nonstandard glossy 12″ x 18″ heavy paper/light cardstock geoboards instead of on one or two large maps or on 8″ x 22″ geoboards.
That’s it. No rules, no counters, no overlays. This series is especially cynical because the same year Critical Hit released it, it also released a full recycling/reprinting of the Afrika Korps series, this time with larger maps and dubbed the Überfox series. So it is possible some ASL players were duped into buying the same scenarios twice in the same year by Critical Hit–especially as the scenario names were changed for the Ultimate Desert Fox products.
Collectively this series contains 26 scenarios (all renamed and with “OOB tweaks and mods” to make them slightly different from previous iterations) as well as 12 nonstandard 12″ x 18″ geoboards (DF1-DF10) featuring various examples of desert terrain, some a little busy. The geoboards are not trimmed properly, so that one cannot mate two geoboards by putting them next to each other; rather, one must overlay one board on top of another, which is irritating.
It is highly unlikely any of the scenarios were re-playtested for the new boards they now use.
With prices for the individual components at the moment ranging from $39.95 to $69.95 each, this is an expensive way to buy a partial reprint.
Note: At the same time Critical Hit released this series, it also released, for separate purchase, so-called “HotHex” versions of the boards for each of the four products in the series. They are large-hex versions of the boards, for people for whom size matters.
